Cradle House is a contemporary family residence centered around a private garden sanctuary, discreetly concealed behind its outer facade. The architecture forms a protective perimeter around the courtyard and primary living spaces, drawing inspiration from the traditional Chinese Siheyuan dwelling. At the heart of the home, a lush internal garden acts as a central anchor, drawing daylight and greenery deep into the interior. The main living and dining areas open fully to the courtyard via expansive sliding glass doors, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. This seamless transition allows the sheltered terraces to serve as natural extensions of the living spaces. Positioned along this threshold is an outdoor dining area – ideally situated to enjoy the tranquility of the garden while remaining protected from the elements and conveniently connected to the kitchen.

Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a vertical green wall that introduces a strong visual and biophilic statement. A water feature at its base adds the calming sound of flowing water, creating an immediate sense of relaxation and retreat as one enters the house. This pairing sets the tone for the house’s close connection to nature, which is reinforced throughout the interior via carefully framed views of greenery and the landscape beyond. A sculptural staircase, illuminated from above by a skylight and framed by a trellised canopy, vertically links the home’s levels. On the upper floor, corridors lined with floor-to-ceiling glass maintain continuous visual connections to the courtyard below. These peripheral walkways also double as informal play zones adjoining the children’s playroom. Privacy screens are thoughtfully integrated where necessary, and a series of smaller, individual gardens are interspered throughout the home to enrich the living experience.

The material palette is deliberately restrained, establishing a quiet, consistent character throughout the house. Grey granite stone is used to clad the exterior, lending a sense of permanence and grounding the architecture in the landscape. Internally, warm oak wall paneling softens the spatial experience, providing natural warmth and texture. White Carrara marble is used for the flooring and kitchen countertops, chosen for its timeless elegance and enduring durability.
